Tasty Kale

IMG_4810

Some of our Aberdeen Angus X cattle strip grazing kale on the farm.

This is the first time we have grown kale for over 30 years the last time we grew it in these fields was in the late 1970’s
when it was grown for the dairy cows we used to have at Springfield Farm in Westcott.

It’s great winter cattle feed high in starch and protein we supplement the fibre requirement with grass silage.

Drilling Grass Seed

20130409-195310.jpg

Our contractor came in to drill some grass seed that should have been drilled last autumn.
Finally the ground was dry enough to plough on Good Friday and then drilled the following week after drying out over the Easter weekend.

A long term grass ley was drilled in two fields and a red clover silage ley in the third.
Lets hope it gets away and up before it gets too dry !

Cycle Path Shaping Up

20130331-220215.jpg

Work by the County Council on the Dorking to Westcott cycle path(Route22) through the farm progresses steadily despite some poor weather.

Once the weather finally warms up (haha!) the new path will be surfaced and finally completed.

The picture shows the spur from Lince Lane taken from the main part of the new east/west path.Work is taking place to fence the area just off the foot bridge over the Pippbrook.

Ploughing at last

Finally it’s dry enough to get some ground ploughed.
These fields behind Westcott are to be sown with grass a risky job in the spring.
It should have been done in the autumn but it was so we you couldn’t move properly on the fields without sinking !
